Essential Driver Training

All new learner drivers who receive their first learner permits on, or after 4th April 2011 will be subject to 12 hours of Essential Driver Training (E.D.T.) before sitting their driving test. On applying for your driver theory test, you should receive an Essential Driver Training booklet. This should provide the student with all relevant information on E.D.T. As an E.D.T. candidate you will also need to contact your local A.D.I. (Approved Driving Instructor). Only a registered A.D.I. can issue you with your Essential Driver Training Logbook. This logbook needs to be filled in & signed off, by your instructor, after every E.D.T. lesson.
The R.S.A. (Road Safety Authority) recommends that E.D.T. Lessons 1-12 should be spread out over the first 6 months of your new learner permit. They also suggest that the student takes, at least, 3 hours to practice in between each E.D.T. Lesson with either their A.D.I. or a sponsor i.e. parent, guardian or family friend, who is also a fully-licenced driver. It is extremely important to note that these E.D.T. lessons are not “12 steps to making a fully licenced driver”. They are merely steps that a new permit holder must now take in order to make them a safer, more competent driver. Ultimately, the bigger picture is to reduce the number of accidents on Irish roads and to save lives. Who wouldn’t want that?

Now let's take the E.D.T. Steps together!

Motorvate Driving School has brought hundreds of Learner Drivers through the E.D.T. process. We can help you to become a safe driver, step by step, as you complete your E.D.T. Log Book.
